What Is an Airbed?
Airbeds use air for primary support as opposed to innersprings, foam, or water.
By adding or removing air within the mattress, the firmness level can be adjusted. Duel chambered air beds allow couples to individually adjust each side of the bed to the firmness / comfort level each partner prefers.
The level of complexity can vary widely among beds that use air for support. For example, Aerobed is a simple airbed, often consisting of little more than an air chamber and air pump.
Then there are more complex airbeds, such as Sleep Number, Comfortaire, Sleep Better, Satbed and others. These beds are often constructed with the following layers (from top to bottom):
- Cover -- provides comfort and the "feel" of a conventional bed
- Foam pad -- provides comfort
- Air chamber(s) -- responsible for main comfort / support
- Supporting foam -- supports a person's body when sitting on edge of bed and fills center of bed between air chambers
- Foundation -- gives additional support and comfort
In addition, the beds have a pump and remote which allow you to set the firmness of the bed with the touch of a button.
