Mattress Firmness
A mattress with "adjustable firmness" means that the bed allows for its firmness to be made harder or softer by the user.
The adjustability (or lack thereof) of the different mattress types is discussed below.
Air
Airbeds often provide adjustable firmness at the touch of a
button. They also offer separate air chambers which can allow each side
of the bed to have its own firmness setting independent of the
other.
Memory
These
mattresses do not offer adjustable firmness. However, one can
purchase a topper for the mattress that can change the bed's
firmness to harder or softer.
Water
Waterbeds can be adjusted in regard to firmness by adding or
removing water. This, of course, takes some work to do and is
not nearly as simple and easy as adjusting firmness on an air
bed.
Latex
These mattresses do not offer adjustable firmness in the same
convenient way that airbeds do. However, they can be custom
made to suit your firmness preference or a topper can be added.
Innerspring / coil
Innerspring beds cannot be adjusted for firmness. However, one
can purchase a topper for the mattress that can change the bed's
firmness to harder or softer.
Futons
Futons do not offer firmness adjustability.
