Glossary
The HoMedics Sound Spa Machine has six nature sounds: ocean, summer night, rain, rain forest, waterfall and heart beat. However, only rain and waterfall provide nearly consistent white noise. The other sounds are variable and perhaps too distracting for some.
The sounds, of course, are digital recordings, and the loop repeats every five seconds or so. If you listen too closely, you can notice the loop starting again which can be distracting. Further, the quality of the sounds is not terrific and often seem like mere static, which may not be restful to some people. Nevertheless, the machine is effective overall in masking many unwanted noises and creating a more relaxing atmosphere.
The HoMedics offers a 15, 30 and 60 second auto-off timer.
Reliability tends to be somewhat of a problem with this machine. It seems flimsy and the volume knob has a tendency to short out quickly with regular use. In other words, if you plan to use this product only occasionally, it may be a good investment for you given that the price is low. With regular use, however, don't expect it to necessarily have a long life.
The product is nicely portable given that it is fairly compact and lightweight (1.2 pounds). It is capable of running on batteries, allowing it to provide sound virtually anytime, such as during a power outage or while camping.
